# Phone numbers

> Add real phone numbers to your account and choose which agent answers each one.

The **Numbers** page (sidebar: **Configure → Numbers**) lists the phone numbers your agents can answer on. Every number on your account appears here with its status and the agent that answers it, whether you added it from this page or from an agent's editor.

## Your numbers at a glance

Each row shows the phone number, a status chip, and the assigned agent (or an **Unassigned** chip if no agent answers it yet). Use the **All / Assigned / Unassigned** filter above the table to narrow the list.

The statuses you'll see:

* **Active** — live and answering.
* **Provisioning** — being set up; this usually resolves on its own within moments, and the page keeps checking for you.
* **Held** — a number you've [given up](/numbers/give-up-a-number), kept for you in case you want it back.
* **Releasing** — a held number whose hold has ended; it's on its way back to the provider and can no longer be recovered.
* **Disabled** — the number couldn't be set up.

Above the table, a line shows how many of your plan's included numbers you're using — and, once you're past your allowance, what each extra number adds per month. That way you know before adding a number whether it's covered by your plan. See [Plans and credits](/billing/plans-and-credits) for how allowances work.

<Note>
  Only workspace admins can add a phone number or give one up. Everyone else in the workspace can still see the list.
</Note>

## Add a number

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the Add number panel">
    Choose **Add number**. A panel slides out titled **Add a phone number**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Search for a number">
    Type a location or prefix — a town, city, region or dialling prefix — and pick a match. A short list of **Available numbers** appears for it. Each number shows its location, and either **Included** (your plan covers it) or the monthly rate it would add.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Check what it costs">
    Pick a number and the panel tells you plainly whether it's included in your plan, or — if you're past your allowance — exactly what it adds to your invoice and from when. Nothing is hidden until the bill.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Add it">
    Choose **Add number**. The number is ordered to your account straight away and appears in the table — **Unassigned** until you give it to an agent.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## Put a number on an agent

Assigning happens in the agent's editor, on its **Phone numbers** tab — the numbers people call to reach this agent.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the agent's Phone numbers tab">
    Open the agent and go to **Phone numbers**. The tab lists every number this agent answers, with its status and whether it takes calls and SMS.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Add a number to the agent">
    Choose **Add a number**. If your account already has spare numbers, the panel offers them first under **Use one of your numbers** — choose **Assign** next to one and it's routed to this agent with nothing new ordered. Or search and order a fresh number, which is assigned to the agent as soon as it's ordered.
  </Step>
</Steps>

To take a number off an agent, use the ✕ on its row in the same tab. Unassigning only detaches it from this agent — the number stays on your account as a spare, ready to reassign. Giving a number up entirely happens on the Numbers page; see [Give up a number](/numbers/give-up-a-number).

Remember that an agent also needs to be [published](/building/publishing) before it answers real calls — a draft agent with a number assigned won't pick up until you publish it.
